__________________________________________________________________ With the beginning of a new year, we usually make our “ New Year’s resolutions.” Frequently to seek a healthier lifestyle, which includes exercise, is on the list. To support this goal, we will look at some facts regarding muscles and strength training, and see why it is important to care for and keep muscles in good condition. 1.) More than a few…….. The human body has more than 650 muscles. 2.) A miniature Charles Atlas…... Muscles are comprised of fibers, each thinner than human hair, which can support up to 1000 times its own weight. 3.) Moving and grooving…... Muscles are efficient machines, using 35– 50% of their potential energy. 4.) Where did the strength go? By age 65, individuals who have not engaged in regular exercise may decrease in muscle strength by as much as 80% 5.) Weighing the truth….. The optimal exercise program for weight control is a combination of aerobic condi- tioning and strength training. Building lean muscle increases calorie burning rate. 6.) Stronger bones, fewer fractures…… Strength training can have a positive effect on Osteoporosis. Load bearing exer- cise, performed over an extended period of time increases bone density. 7.) Staying on your feet……… Proper strength training can cause improvement in both muscular strength and balance, thus helping prevent falls. 8.) A tune-up for life…….. Because muscular fitness is a critical part of functional fitness, strength training should be an essential part of any workout regimen.
The Parish nurses wish you a happy, healthy New Year!
